Coach Code of Conduct

PBO Coach Code of Conduct

Palos Baseball Organization (PBO) is committed to providing a safe, positive, and development-focused environment for all players. As a volunteer coach or manager in PBO, you agree to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, sportsmanship, and leadership.

1. Player Safety & Welfare

I will make the safety and well-being of all players my top priority.

I will never knowingly place a player in a dangerous situation.

I will ensure players use helmets, proper equipment, and safe techniques at all times.

I will monitor weather conditions, field safety, and player injuries.

I will report all injuries or incidents promptly to a PBO Trustee.

2. Positive Coaching

I will encourage players with positive reinforcement and constructive teaching—not belittling, yelling, or humiliation.

I will focus on skill development, teamwork, and effort rather than winning at all costs.

I will foster an environment where every player feels valued.

3. Respect for Umpires

I understand that umpires have the final authority on all calls.

I am the only individual permitted to calmly question a call when appropriate.

I will never argue, yell at, threaten, or demean an umpire—especially youth umpires.

I will help teach players and parents to respect umpires as well.

4. Professional Conduct at All Times

I will demonstrate exemplary conduct before, during, and after games.

I will not use foul language or display negative behavior.

I will avoid confrontations with other coaches, parents, umpires, or spectators.

I understand that I represent PBO, and my behavior directly reflects on the league.

5. Zero Tolerance Policy

I understand that PBO enforces a Zero Tolerance Policy, and that violations may result in suspension or removal. Prohibited behaviors include:

Arguing with umpires or staff

Using profanity or abusive language

Threatening or intimidating players, parents, or officials

Throwing equipment in anger

Encouraging players to intentionally injure, intimidate, or disrespect opponents

Harassing behavior in person or on social media

6. Communication & Collaboration

I will communicate respectfully and promptly with parents about schedules, expectations, and concerns.

I will work collaboratively with my coaching staff and volunteers.

I will direct any disputes or issues to a PBO Trustee—not handle them confrontationally.

7. Playing Time, Lineups & Development

I will follow PBO rules regarding playing time and player participation.

I will give all players the opportunity to learn various positions when appropriate.

I will not show favoritism or punish players with reduced playing time due to performance errors.

8. Commitment to Training & Meetings

I agree to attend all required PBO coaching clinics, meetings, safety sessions, league orientations, and any required coach-certification training.

I understand that completion of required training is mandatory for coaching eligibility.

9. Background Checks & Compliance

I agree to submit the information needed for a full background check, as required by PBO and the City of Palos Heights.

I understand that failure to pass or complete the background check will result in removal from coaching responsibilities.

I agree to comply with all PBO policies and local regulations.

10. Game & Practice Management

I will arrive on time, prepared, and organized.

I will maintain a safe and orderly dugout and field environment.

I will ensure that no player is left unattended after games or practices.

11. Substance-Free Environment

I will not use or be under the influence of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or vaping products during any PBO event.

I will help maintain a wholesome atmosphere appropriate for youth sports.

12. Respect for Facilities

I will treat all fields, equipment, and facilities—including those of the City of Palos Heights—with care.

I will ensure my team cleans the dugout and surrounding areas after every event.

13. Social Media Conduct

I will not post negative, abusive, or inflammatory content about players, umpires, PBO, or other teams.

I understand that online misconduct may result in disciplinary action.

14. Disciplinary Actions

I understand that violations of this Coach Code of Conduct may result in:

Verbal or written warning

Removal from a game

Suspension from team activities

Removal from the coaching position

Revocation of my child’s registration

Any action deemed necessary by PBO Trustees to protect players and uphold league standards

15. Coach Agreement

By agreeing to volunteer as a PBO coach or manager:

I acknowledge that I have read and understand this Coach Code of Conduct.

I agree to uphold these expectations at all times.

I understand that failure to follow this Code may result in disciplinary action as determined by PBO Trustees.
